Dear Georgetown Elementary Parents,

Our Holiday Gift Shop is fast approaching and is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 7 through Thursday, Dec. 10.  Your child will soon be experiencing this exciting program that enables him/her to purchase their own special holiday gifts for family and friends.

We are very excited about the value of this event as a learning experience as well as a service to our students and parents.  This will also help build self-esteem in your child and give him/her an opportunity to gain experience in selecting gifts.

PTC Meeting Minutes – Nov. 12, 2009

PTC Meeting Minutes – 7:00 pm

Board Members Present:  Jamie Ham, Cindy Roerig, Krista Lawrence, Brenda Zuverink, Carrie Clark-Berry

Attendees:  4

Jamie welcomed all attendees and the Board introduced themselves.  The minutes from the September 15, 2009 meeting were approved with a motion from Michelle Wieringa, seconded by Angel Truman.

PRINCIPAL/TEACHER REPORT – THERESA REAGAN:  The school year is continuing to go well for the teachers and students.  Everyone is getting ready for the Art Show on December 1 and the Holiday Program at Resurrection Life on December 10.  The cold and flu season is upon us, so keep washing your hands and trying to stay healthy.

Mrs. Reagan also shared with us that at the administrative team meeting today Superintendent Ceglarek asked that all administrators and parents continue to contact representatives regarding concerns about looming deep cuts to schools across the state.

Mr. Ceglarek has asked that we remind parents of the following:

*Go to the district website for details about the cuts.
*Contact your representatives to ask that a new formula for funding  schools be developed as soon as possible.
*Remember that we are not locally controlled any longer.  All decisions about  school operations now come from Lansing.  Schools are funded by the state  sales tax system and the lottery.  This taxing model worked well when we   had an economy supported by the auto industry.  Now that this has failed,  the state sales tax model is not an efficient way to fund schools.
*If the funding formula is not changed, cuts to our district will be severe  beginning next year.  Representatives are  pushing for consolidation of  districts (districts close together geographically would become one),  elimination of programs, teaching positions, parapros, reduced transportation   routes, etc.

Superintendent Ceglarek will be attending our March 16th PTC meeting, so mark your calendars now and plan to attend!

BUDGET – KRISTA LAWRENCE:  The budget was reviewed and some adjustments have been made.  We were able to eliminate line items of $1,200 for an ELMO projector and $1,000 towards an author visit for the Just Write program, and we have also reduced the field trip line item to $3 per student instead of $5.  As a result of these changes we will be able to renew magazine subscriptions for the classrooms and also provide Razz Kid reading programs for the lower elementary classrooms.  A motion was made to approve these changes by Angel Truman, seconded by Nancy Patrick.

BOOK FAIR RECAP – CARRIE CLARK-BERRY:  Our fall book fair was our most successful book fair yet.  We were able to fulfill all of the teachers’ wish lists and provide many, many new books to our library.  Thanks you to everyone who volunteered or purchased books at this event.  We are looking for a co-chair to help with next year’s book fairs.  If you are interested in being a co-chair, please contact the office or Cheri Conklin (669-5818) as soon as possible.

FATHER/SON EVENT – JAMIE HAM:  The Grand Valley football game father/son event was a great event.  Thanks to Susie Coxen for all her work in organizing this wonderful evening!

WALK-A-THON:  Our walk-a-thon fundraiser this year raised just over $8,100.  Thanks to everyone who participated in this event.  It is our main fundraiser of the year and will help pay for many of the events and supplies the teachers and students need throughout the year.

TARRY  HALL SKATING PARTIES:  We are not holding any roller skating parties this year due to a lack of a chairperson to organize this event as well as a lower number of participants in the last few skating parties we had last year.

HOLIDAY GIFT SHOP – JAMIE HAM:  The holiday gift shop will be held December 8-10.  We are again using Fun Services for this event.  There are still a few openings for volunteers to help the students shop.  Contact Jamie Ham (cjham20@comcast.net) if you are interested in helping with this fun event.

A motion to allocate some funds to students in need so they can purchase items at the holiday gift shop was made by Michelle Wieringa, seconded by Angel Truman.

IF YOU EVER HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS OR CONCERNS WITH THE DECISIONS THAT ARE BEING MADE AT OUR PTC MEETINGS, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ANY OF THE BOARD MEMBERS BY PHONE OR E-MAIL OR ATTEND A MEETING TO LET US KNOW WHAT YOU’RE THINKING.  WE WELCOME NEW FACES AND NEW IDEAS!!

 Meeting adjourned at 8:20 pm.

THE NEXT PTC MEETING WILL BE HELD ON JANUARY 14 AT 7:00 PM

 Upcoming events:

Marco’s Pizza Night – Wednesday, November 18 and December 16

Jet’s Pizza Night – Tuesday, December 1 and January 5

Art Show – December 1
