PTC MEETING MINUTES

May 4, 2010 ~ Media Room – 7:00 p.m.

Board Members Present:  Kristi Fellows, Jamie Ham, Cindy Roerig, Krista Lawrence, Brenda Zuverink, Carrie Clark-Berry Attendees:  6

The meeting was opened by Kristi.  Staci Nieboer moved to approve the minutes from the last PTC meeting, with Angel Truman seconding.

TEACHER REPORT – MRS. BURDIS:  The scores from recent testing that the 3rd through 5th graders completed have been received, and the students performed well.  It’s a very busy time of year at the school, so parents are urged to check the school blog and the teacher blogs regularly to keep up to date on all the activities coming up.  Class placement for next year is beginning, and the teachers thank all the parents who returned their child surveys to help in this process.  There’s only 3 weeks of school left!

REVIEW OF BUDGET – BRENDA ZUVERINK :  The budget was reviewed, and no major changes are noted.  After a question at the last meeting about the amount of funds we keep in our account, a few other school were contacted to see what their Treasurers’ policies are.  At this time Georgetown’s balance is lower than most but is an acceptable balance.

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK – MICHELLE WIERINGA:  A fabulous Hollywood movie themed week is underway for our wonderful Georgetown teachers.  All the teachers are enjoying being spoiled this week with some wonderful lunches, a few gifts, as well as all the amazing superstar posters that are hanging throughout the school.  Thanks to Amanda Troyer for such a wonderful job on the posters turning all our teachers into a superstar or superhero!

READING COUNTS – ANGIE ROON:  The Reading Counts end-of-year party will be held on June 4 with a Blast to the Past theme.  The 2nd and 3rd graders will celebrate in the morning and 4th and 5th graders will celebrate in the afternoon.  Some volunteers are still needed to help for this event.  Please contact Angie Roon at angroon@sbcglobal.net if you are able to help out.

SPRING CARNIVAL – KRISTI FELLOWS:  Our annual Spring Carnival will be held on Saturday, May 15 from 11-2.  If you didn’t pre-purchase your wristbands, you can still purchase wristbands the day of the event for $15 each.  There will be lots of fun games, food, and auctions/raffles.  A few more volunteers are needed, so contact Susie Coxen at susan@togc.net as soon as possible if you’re able to help with this event.

2010-2011 PTC BOARD MEMBERS:  Krista Lawrence moved to approve and Michelle Wieringa seconded the approval of the PTC Board for the 2010-2011 school year.  The new Board will be:

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SCHOOL CARNIVAL!

We are in need of a few ADULT volunteers at Georgetown’s Spring Carnival on Saturday, May 15. If you are able to help us out, we need some volunteers for the following time slots:

10:45 am -12:15 pm
12:00 pm – 1:30 pm
1:15 pm – 3:00 pm

You would be workiing as either a cashier or helping to serve food items.

MARCO’S PIZZA NIGHT – WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21

Just a reminder that WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21, is a Marco’s Pizza Night for Georgetown. If you’re in the mood for pizza, subs, or maybe just need an easy dinner, call in your order or pick it up. Make sure to also give them the name of your child’s teacher so his/her class gets credit for the purchase. It’s that easy. Thanks for all of your support!

BOX TOPS DUE THIS FRIDAY, MARCH 26!

The Box Tops competition deadline is being extended to this Friday, March 26!  So if you haven’t sent in all those Box Tops sitting in your cupboard or drawer, now is the time.  Make sure you put your child’s name and teacher on the bag when you send them in so your child gets credit for them.

 Winners of the Box Tops competition will be announced before Spring Break.

PTC Meeting Minutes – 3/16/10

PTC Meeting Minutes ~ March 16, 2010 – 7:00 pm

 Board Members Present:  Kristi Fellows, Jamie Ham, Cindy Roerig, Krista Lawrence, Brenda Zuverink, Carrie Clark-Berry

Attendees:  20

 Theresa Reagan opened the meeting and welcomed all in attendance.   Hudsonville’s Superintendent, Nick Ceglarek, was then introduced and invited to share some information regarding our district’s financial condition, MEAP scores, and state funding changes.

 Guest Speaker ~ Nick Ceglarek, Superintendent:  Right now our enrollment in the district is 6,000 students and growing.  As most of us know, we have experienced a $165/student cut in state aid funding this year.  This resulted in a loss of close to $1 million for Hudsonville.  For the 2010-2011 school year it is expected we will have another $268/student cut in state aid.  Even though we are among the lowest funded districts in Michigan, we have done a great job of providing excellent education on a low budget for years.  We will need to continue to be financially frugal in the years to come because of these cuts in funding.  Contact your elected officials to give them your thoughts/opinions on our school funding.  You can also visit hudsonville.k12.mi.us for more information on school funding as well as district specific data.  Click on “District Information, then “Superintendent” and then “Legislative Update.”  The floor was opened to questions from attendees, and Mr. Ceglarek addressed questions regarding the sales tax, Hudsonville’s budget for next year, and the possibility of a second high school.

 Guest Speaker ~ Steve Bowerman, Hudsonville School Board Member:  Mr. Bowerman has been on the Hudsonville School Board for 8 years.  For 3 years before that he was a parent member of the curriculum council.  He has 5 sons who have all been a part of the Hudsonville School District.  He will be up for re-election in May and would like your support.  Feel free to contact him if you would like any further information.

 The minutes from the January 14 PTC meeting were approved with a motion from Michelle Wieringa, seconded by Nancy Patrick.

 DESK Program ~ Jeff Wressell:  Jeff spoke about the Dads Empowering Super Kids program that Georgetown has started.  It is a program to help dads become more involved in the elementary school.  Approximately 25 volunteers have been helping students in the Bustin’ Thru Books program over the last several weeks, and so far the students have read approximately 35,000 minutes total.  This is a great program for helping kids build their reading skills.  Jeff would like to provide the kids who have participated with T-shirts, and is putting on a fundraiser at the Georgetown Ice Arena to help raise the funds for this.  This will be a night of open skating at the Georgetown Ice Arena on April 24 from 4:30-6:00.  There will be raffle tickets sold for some prizes, as well as some special guests from the Griffins and Red Wings.  More information will be sent home soon.  Contact Jeff if you have any questions.

 PTC Nominations for the 2010-2011 School Year are needed now!  We will vote in the new PTC Board at your next meeting on May 4.  The positions of Co-President, Vice President, Co-Treasurer, and Secretary are open for nominees.  Please contact any current Board member with any nomination you may have.

 Current nominees for next year are:  Nancy Patrick (secretary), Staci Nieboer (secretary or vice president), Sherri Barr (secretary), Jeff Wressell, and Amanda Troyer.

 Principal/Teacher Report ~ Theresa Reagan:  MEAP scores have now been published and can be released. As soon as the Parent Reports are received from the State they will be sent home.  Our students did very well and we should be proud of all of them. 

 Pre-K and Kindergarten screening took place this week.  We have 111 kindergartners registered at Georgetown, and many of them will be new families.

 Our sister school in Taiwan will be sending some students to Georgetown to visit.  They will be here around June 2.  There are so many students who want to come that they are having to take exams and audition to be chosen.  We can’t wait to show them our school and meet our wonderful students.

 Budget ~ Brenda Zuverink:  The budget was reviewed.  Classroom baskets brought in $1,549.  We have also received approximately $250 to help cover expenses for Popcorn Fridays.  A motion was made by Ann Richards to approve the purchase of new Die Cuts for Amber Bretz, seconded by Angel Truman.  The Just Write posters will be purchased for approximately $250-300.  We are also planning to purchase a new basketball hoop for the gym.

 Mother/Daughter Night Recap ~ Michelle Wieringa:  This event went very well and has received lots of positive feedback.  The candy bar was a big hit with all in attendance.  All the products looked great.  We have some very talented students and moms!

 Classroom Baskets Recap ~ Angel Truman:  The baskets were a huge hit again this year.  Thank you to all the families who donated products for the baskets and to Angel and Michelle for all the work they put into creating the baskets as well as selling tickets during all three nights of conferences.

 Spring Carnival ~ Susie Coxen:  The Spring Carnival will be held on Saturday, May 15.  Fun Services will be providing the games again this year, and we will also have popcorn, snow cones, cotton candy, and a food item.  The cost is still being determined.  We will also be having a silent auction as a service project/fundraiser for the Lamer family.  If you have any items you’d like to donate to the auction, please contact Susie Coxen, Kristi Fellows, or Cheri Conklin.  Volunteers will be needed to sell carnival tickets as well as to help with food sales and the auction.

 New Business:  The possibility of doing a flower sale as a possible fundraiser was discussed.

 THE NEXT PTC MEETING WILL BE HELD ON MAY 4 AT 7:00 PM.  WE WILL BE VOTING IN THE NEW MEMBERS OF THE PTC BOARD AT THIS MEETING.

 PTC Board nominations for the 2010-2011 school year will also be accepted at the March 16 PTC meeting.  We would like nominations for the positions of Co-President, Vice President, Co-Treasurer, and Secretary.  We also have several committees that will need chairpersons.  Please e-mail or call any current PTC Board member if you have nominations or are interested in any position yourself.  We will be voting in the new PTC Board at our May 4 PTC meeting.
  
We encourage everyone, especially new families to our school, to attend and help make the decisions that will be affecting your school activities and students this year.  We hope to see you there!
Meet Our Superintendent Ceglarek
On Tuesday, March 16, our superintendent, Nick Ceglarek, will be presenting to our PTC.   Mr. Ceglarek will be sharing the current goals for our district, including dealing with the challenges in state funding and planning for the upcoming building projects that are designed to accommodate our increasing enrollment.

This would be an excellent meeting to attend, providing you with first hand information about the district initiatives. 

 The meeting will be held in the media center at 7:00 pm.  This is also our Family Night for the Book Fair from 3:30-7:00.  You can do some shopping at the Book Fair and then head down the hall for the PTC meeting!  Now is the time to stock up on some great books to read during Spring Break.

We are in need of some volunteers to help out during Georgetown’s Spring Book Fair.  The fair will be held during the week of March 15-19.  The following times are still available:

Classroom Basket Raffle Information

Coming Soon…Classroom Baskets Raffle

You should be receiving a note from your child’s classroom with their selected a basket theme.  Donations for these baskets can be sent to their classroom up until Thursday, Feb 25th.  Each classroom will have a box to drop off basket donations.  If you’d rather make a cash donation, send cash or check (made out to Georgetown PTC) to your child’s teacher.

These baskets will be on display in the main hallway outside the library March 1-3th, during the school day AND during conferences. You or your child can purchase tickets during lunch time or conferences where the baskets are on display.  Cost for a ticket is $1.  The Raffle Drawing will take place on Thursday, March 4th.  Proceeds from this raffle will be going back to your child’s classroom.
